Welcome back to my weekend reflections, where I dive into the highs and lows of my workweek!
High: It was a good weekend—the census was low, and the consult list wasn’t overwhelming. I left on time and finally had the chance to restock my resources. Every month, I spend about two to three hours updating, sorting, and filing them, plus making ready-to-go folders I can grab when a call, crisis, or consult comes through. Over the years, I’ve learned I’m not the type of girl who has the time or the patience to look up resources on the spot. I’d rather be prepared ahead of time so I’m not flustered in the moment.
The folders I run out of most quickly are:
- Postpartum resources for mothers
- Homeless resources
- Social admits (think families abandoning their loved ones at the hospital)
- Hospice
- Domestic violence/abuse
Low: I rarely say no to a consult; however, this weekend we had one on a 13-year-old child who delivered a baby. They put in a consult for postpartum. I won’t get into the details, but it’s absolutely mind-numbing that this child had a child, and that the father of the baby is her own brother. I’ve seen a lot in this career, but since I work in an adult setting, I almost never see a child, let alone one delivering a baby herself. I said no to the consult because our weekday social worker was scheduled to come in over the weekend to continue the case, and I felt that adding myself in would have been like having too many chefs in the kitchen.
