I don’t Like Carry Ons

Posted on February 2, 2025February 14, 2025 by gabby

I am not your traditional carry-on traveler—I’m all about being prepared for the unexpected but with a tote bag. Whether it’s a 4+ hour layover, a delay, or a canceled flight, I’m ready. My go-to? A large tote bag, always. When I was younger, I traveled the world with a gorgeous teal Kate Spade bag, and now I use a classic brown Tory Burch tote as my personal/carry-on bag.

I can’t stand lugging around mini luggage—opening and closing them constantly, wrestling them down or up into airplane compartments—I just find it annoying. I like having everything I need within reach, and easily accessible.

What’s in My Tote?

Here’s a breakdown of what I always pack, no matter the destination or flight duration:

Tech Essentials

  • Phone charger
  • Headphones – wireless and wired (I like having both) because I have been i planes where they are still using wired headphones.
  • Wireless headphone adapter – a lifesaver for connecting to Bluetooth, especially for in-flight entertainment.
  • Kindle – my portable library.

Comfort Must-Haves

  • Earplugs – for when I want to sleep but don’t want to wear headphones or listen to music.
  • Eye mask – crucial for long haul flights where or catching some sleep in the airport.
  • Snacks – my non-negotiable travel companions. Favorite picks? Protein bars, trail mix, or even some homemade goodies.

Personal Care Essentials

  • Travel toiletries:
    • Face wash
    • Toothbrush and toothpaste
    • Mouthwash
    • Deodorant
    • Hand lotion
    • Face moisturizer
  • Hairbrush
  • Hair ties and clips – because airport hair is real.

Must-Have Basics

One full set of clothes – I always wear loose, stretchy jeans on flights (comfort is key), but I pack a blouse, panties, and socks just in case. Whether it’s spills, temperature changes, or an unexpected overnight at the airport, this backup set has saved me more time than I can count.

Why This Packing List Works for Me

These items have been my trusty companions through countless flights, from quick hops to over 20-hour marathons. My tote is always neatly organized and tucked under the seat in front of me, so I’m never scrambling for headphones mid-flight or regretting not packing a snack during a delay.

When traveling internationally, my passport stays on me at all times—either in the inside pocket of my jacket or my pant pockets. I never keep it in my tote or checked luggage. Having it within easy reach gives me peace of mind, whether I’m navigating security checkpoints or catching some sleep mid-flight.

Now, let’s talk about jeans. I know they’re not everyone’s first choice for travel, but for me, a pair of loose, stretchy jeans hits the perfect sweet spot between comfort and looking put-together, especially for flights under 4 hours. For longer flights, I pack a pair of stretchy black pants that look professional and switch into them in flight. Leggings and sweatpants? I save those exclusively for lounging at my hotel or Airbnb.

What About You?

Are you a tote traveler like me, or do you swear by a trusty carry-on suitcase? What’s your can’t-travel-without-it item? Let me know in the comments—I’m always curious to hear how other people tackle travel days.
