Packing List- Floating in the River at San Marcos, Texas

If you live in Texas or have heard of the lovely state of Texas, you know it gets hot down south. Summers can be brutal, but there’s no better way to cool off than floating the river at San Marcos. Every year, my best friends and I make it a tradition to go on a mini girls’ trip there. It’s relatively cheap, close to Austin, and an easy way to hang out without planning too many logistics. Here’s a mini list of my must-have items for floating the river at San Marcos:

Sunscreen
It might seem like common sense, but it’s easy to underestimate the Texas sun’s intensity. Pack plenty of waterproof sunscreen and reapply often. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Cooler
To stay hydrated and keep our snacks fresh, we always bring a sturdy cooler. When my friends and I pack a couple of sandwiches, plenty of snacks, and lots of water, it’s important to note that cans aren’t allowed on the river, so we pour our drinks into reusable cups like Yetis or Hydroflasks to keep them cool and river-friendly before hitting the water.

Waterproof Speaker
What’s a float trip without some music? Bring a waterproof speaker to set the perfect vibe as you drift down the river. My friends and I always create a fun playlist ahead of time for the river. It really amps up the fun and keeps you entertained throughout the float!

Waterproof shoes
The riverbed can be rocky and slippery, so protect your feet with a good pair of water shoes or sandals. They’ll give you better traction and save you from any ouch moments. I personally love my Chacos, but any waterproof shoe will do the job!

Towel and change of clothes
After a day of floating, you’ll want to dry off and change into something comfortable. Pack a lightweight towel and a fresh set of clothes so you can stay cozy for the ride home.

Dry Bag
Keep your essentials dry with a waterproof dry bag. Store your phone, keys, wallet, and any other valuables you don’t want to get wet.

Sunglasses and Hat
A pair of polarized sunglasses will protect your eyes from the glare, and a wide-brimmed hat or a baseball cap will give you extra shade.
