Hi, y’all!
I’m back from my unannounced (but very much-needed) break from the online world. Taking a step back was intentional because I knew November kicks off our busy festival and wedding season, and I wanted to be fully present and involved in daily life.
So, where have I been?
Bandi Chhor Divas/Diwali
November started off with Bandi Chhor Divas/Diwali! Bandi Chhor Divas is always such a fun holiday—a perfect excuse to gather with extended family, celebrate at the Gurdwara, and remember our core values.
For Sikhs, we call it Bandi Chhor Divas. It marks the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, from imprisonment in 1619. Guru Ji not only secured his own freedom but also ensured the release of 52 Hindu princes who were unjustly detained alongside him. This act of compassion and justice is why Diwali is also known as Bandi Chhor Divas—the Day of Liberation.
What I love most about Bandi Chhor Divas is that it’s not just about the fun (though I won’t lie, that’s a big part). It’s also about community, tradition, and grounding yourself in what really matters. It’s a time to reflect on what matters and embrace the values of freedom and equality.
Gurpurab
The following week, it was Gurpurab! Gurpurab, to me, feels like our version of Christmas. It’s the biggest holiday of the year for Sikhs, and this time, being home with my family made it extra special. There’s something so meaningful about going to the Gurdwara, listening to the prayers and kirtan (hymns), reconnecting with friends you haven’t seen in ages, and simply basking in the peaceful yet joyous atmosphere.
The langar, as always, was incredible—mithai (sweets), creamy dal, and freshly made rotis, all served with so much love and care. I even bumped into an old childhood friend I hadn’t seen in years. We laughed about how time has flown—from racing to be first in line for langar as kids to now juggling adult lives and marriages—it’s been a whirlwind.
It really hit me how much I missed this sense of togetherness during the years I was away. In the last ten years, I’ve only lived at home for three, and being back now feels like I’m reconnecting with my roots in such a meaningful way. There’s nothing quite like sharing these moments with your people, dressed in your finest, savoring your favorite dishes, and experiencing that deep sense of belonging.
Friend’s wedding
Last week, I had the joy of attending a dear friend’s wedding, and wow, it was beautiful! The sangeet was an absolute blast—it was held on a rooftop with the Houston skyline as the backdrop. Those views were stunning, especially when the city lights came alive after dark! The food was delicious, the music had everyone dancing, and the vibes were just immaculate.
The following day was the wedding, and it’s probably one of the classiest weddings I’ve been to in a while. Everything ran on time, the food was amazing, the bride looked fabulous, and the vibes were on point. During the lavaan, it was so peaceful and beautiful to watch. Seeing the bride look so gorgeous and watching their love story unfold, surrounded by friends and family, was truly heartwarming. I’m so glad I was able to witness it.
This month has been non-stop fun, and we’re not done yet! With Thanksgiving this week, my brother coming into town, and celebrating my mom’s birthday, there’s so much to look forward to— and that’s not even counting everything coming up in December!
Amid all the excitement, I decided to take a break from posting online over the past few weeks to be fully present in the moment. No stressing over “perfect” posts or rushing to get something out—I just wanted to enjoy life as it happens.
Taking this break was such a refreshing reminder to reset my focus on reality and really be present in everyday life. It’s so easy to get caught up in the constant cycle of checking our phones and staying glued to what’s happening online, but stepping away allowed me to appreciate what was right in front of me. I feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and genuinely happy.
I am excited to be back and share a part of my life again with yall!
How have you been taking care of yourself lately? Have you done anything recently to disconnect and reset?
