Weekend Reflections July 7, 2025

Posted on July 8, 2025July 9, 2025 by gabby

Welcome back to my weekend reflections, where I dive into the highs and lows of my workweek!

High: This was a good weekend. The census was low across the hospital, which meant we all had a manageable load. With coworkers out for summer break, I have been helping more on the case management side of my role, focusing heavily on discharge planning. It’s been fun getting to use that particular skill set. When I first started in my current job, I was trained for almost two months to be able to handle an entire floor by myself as a case manager. Even though I was hired as a weekend social worker, the expectation was that if needed on Mondays, I could cover half a floor with another case manager. Of course, having the case management training and background helps with my role on the weekend, from social admits in the ED to patient needs, dialysis chairs, and hospice consults. It’s all interwoven, and I am always grateful to have the case manager skill set.

Low: On the other hand, I had quite a few mother-baby consults come through this weekend. I enjoy talking to new mothers; however, this weekend involved young moms with no prenatal care, high postpartum scores, and CPS reports were made. It’s never fun having to disclose to a mother that I am making a report due to concerns of neglect or safety.
